ACRYLIC MATERIAL

Whereas polycarbonate (PC) is the choice for maximum protection, Acrylic" (or PMMA as it 's technically known) is commonly used in sunglass lenses when cost and not impact protection is the main concern. Not as impact resistant as PC Acrylic does offer certain benefits to the consumer. The material is very hard and has very good mechanical stability. It has an index @588nm of 1.49, and an Abbe number of 55.3. Acrylic is also known for its very good clarity and excellent transmission properties throughout the visible portion of the spectrum.

- Slightly higher transmission approx 3-5 % ( clearer lens)
- Glossy shiny appearance
- More scratch resistance
Whereas traditionally PC lens material has an inbuilt UV absorber as standard, you should not automatically accept that the AC used on your lens will also give the same kind of protection. When buying AC lens always specifically request that the lens have been made with a UV400 absorber added.

Added in during the lens manufacturing process , UV400 absorber will ensure that your lens offers full UV protection. ( the absorbers are mixed with the material, and unlike UV coatings will not wear off
