ANTI-REFLECTION

Why do you need AR coatings?
Between 4-16% of light is reflected back (lost) by a lens, depending on the material and it's
refractive index. The higher the index the more light s reflected and the more noticeable an improvement you get from the AR coating. By adding an AR coating the overall transmission of the lens can be increased by almost 3.5-1.5.5%.
(again depending on the lens material ( substrate)

Why does AR coating have a slight tint?
The AR coatings work at different degrees across the color spectrum. Hence the anti-reflectance effect is not the same for all colors, which results in a slight color change to the lens. This color change can be controlled so that you get a pleasing cosmetic tint, such as light green, blue or red; which improves the overall appearance of the lens.

What is an AR coating*
Anti-reflective coating is a multi-layer coating (5 or more) of metal oxide, deposited on a lens by vacuum deposit method. This multi-layer coating reduces the amount of light reflected from the lens and thus improves its clarity. Less reflectance means more light is reaching the wearers eyes. ( higher transmission) *coating thickness is a few microns thick.

What are the advantages of an AR coating?
-
Clearer vision
-
Enhanced appearance.
-
Reduced reflectance
improves the natural look of
the lens (more invisible)
-
Increases contrast and clarity
-
Reduces eyestrain

|
|
Can AR lenses be tinted or UV-dyed?
Tinting or dying of the lens may affect the AR performance and it is recommended that the lens not be dyed or tinted, so as to maximize the AR performance.
|
|
|
REDUCES EYE STRAIN
Reflections from your eyeglass lenses (often called ghost images) can contribute to eye fatigue. This is especially true for wearers when operating a computer, driving a car, or in an environment where there are many light sources. |
|
|
How do AR coatings work?
AR coatings work because the multi layer coating is designed to create an optical interference pattern, which reduces reflected rays. The interference is a destructive pattern that neutralizes the reflected light waves. |
|
|
SAFER NIGHT DRIVING
Reflections from lights at night can be distracting-particularly those off your eyeglasses. AR coatings virtually eliminate those reflections so you can focus on driving, not reflections. Further, to drive safely at night you need all the light possible. AR Coatings increase the amount of light transmitted through eyeglasses--a welcome addition to nighttime vision. |

common are AR coated lenses? How many people are wearing them?
