IMPACT RESISTANT
Developed originally for the aerospace industry, polycarbonate windows can be found in airliners, Space Shuttles and are used for face plates in astronauts' helmets. It is also used for sports helmets and face plates. Riot police shields and helmets are made from polycarbonate as are bulletproof windows. As you can imagine, polycarbonate lenses are more impact resistant than any other lens material and make up very safe, impact resistant lenses. 
As a result of much research and development, this modern space-age material is then highly refined when used for making safety glasses. Polycarbonate lenses are the strongest lenses that can be made and can be fabricated considerable thinner than any other material while still providing protection unequaled by all other lenses. This is why polycarbonate lenses are the only material used for safety glasses and Rx lens for supplied to children and young adults in many offices. They are also the required lens for all sports activities. Anyone with reduced vision or no vision in one eye will want to protect their good eye by wearing polycarbonate lenses. 
 
LIGHTWEIGHT
Polycarbonate material has an extremely light specific gravity. This means that lenses made of this material will be lighter in weight than other plastic lenses. In addition, because they are so tough, they can be made thinner than other lens materials. Being thinner and having the lightest specific gravity of any lens means that polycarbonate lenses will provide the maximum in wearing comfort. You often see these miracle lenses advertised as "feather light" lenses. When inserted in one of the new lightweight fashion frames, polycarbonate lenses provide the ultimate in wearing comfort. "Comfort" has become an important feature of modern eyewear and no lens provides more comfortable eyewear than those made of polycarbonate. 
 
UV PROTECTION
Protecting the eyes from the harmful effects of ultraviolet light present in all sunlight has become an important health concern. Polycarbonate lenses include a built-in UV inhibitor so that persons wearing polycarbonate never have to pay extra for UV protection. Anyone working or playing outdoors, under fluorescent lamps or in front of a special permanent filter that provides the maximum protection available against this hazard. These modern lenses block 99% of all potentially damaging ultraviolet radiation. There is no additional cost for this added protection. Polycarbonate lenses are the best investment you can make when ordering new eyewear. 

 

SUPER SCRATCH PROTECTION
The basic polycarbonate material is extremely soft which is why the material can absorb so much impact, even from bullets. When used for eyeglass lenses, polycarbonate always includes a very tough, scratch-resistant coating applied to both sides of the lens. This coating provides protection against normal handling scratches. Since all polycarbonate lenses include scratch coating, you never have to pay extra for special scratch protection. 
 
AFFORDABLE
Generally speaking, the higher a lens material's index, the greater the cost. Polycarbonate lenses are the exception to this rule. Polycarbonate high index lenses are often recommended because they are affordably priced and include the many extra benefits outlined above, with no additional charges to pay. 
 

IN CONCLUSION
Polycarbonate lenses can be tinted to any desired color, including sunglass tints. While many eye doctors and dispensers offer polycarbonate lenses because of the exceptional impact resistance they provide, polycarbonate's many other features are truly making this space-age lens the lens-of-choice for all eyeglass wearers. 

 

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF POLYCARBONATE
PC is a linear polycarbonic acid ester prepared from a dihdric phenol. It possesses extraordinarily good dimensional stability with a high impact strength which is maintained over a wide temperature range. This makes it ideal for the manufacture of laboratory safety shields, vacuum desiccators and centrifuge tubes. PC may be autoclaved (maximum continuous working temperature 130 Deg. C., and 140 deg. C. for short periods), but some loss in mechanical strengh occurs on repeated autoclaving and the equipment should not then be used for vacuum applications. The carbonate linkages in the chain make the material subject to reaction with a variety of concentrated acids and bases and it is soluble in various organic solvents.
